Early Edward Troughton Double Frame Sextant

Edward Troughton, London, double or pillar frame brass sextant, 10 inch radius, twin brass frames engraved "No. 93" connected by pillars, large graduated arc measuring 13.75 inches across reading "Troughton- London" and divided from -5 to 155, knurled tangent screw for vernier adjustment, four index and horizon mirror shades, three telescopes, walnut handle, all in a keystone-shaped dovetailed wooden box with later retailer label.
Estimate: $800.00 - $1,200.00

Condition Report: Heavy verdigris on brass. The index magnifier assembly is missing. The horizon mirror and mount look like later replacements. Index mirror and sun shades are in good condition Top of wooden case has a crack on one corner. Though the instrument has three telescopes the case appears to have a spot for a fourth. Edward Troughton (1753-1835) was a British instrument maker who invented the double frame sextant in 1788. The signature on the arc is hard to read but compares favorably with other examples of instruments signed by Troughton. The low serial number and size of this instrument suggests that it is an early version of this design. Dimensions are for the closed wooden box.

Center of arc reads "HALL COLBY / ALTIMETER / Patent Applied For / No. 21". Two vernier scales, one for the "ALTITUDE" scale showing degrees from a horizontal axis and one for the "ZENITH" scale showing degrees from a vertical axis. Free-swinging pendulum establishes a vertical line of reference against which the angles are measured. Spring-loaded pin locks pendulum when a reading has been made.
Estimate: $800.00 - $1,200.00

Condition Report: The initial patent in England was granted in 1855. The improved patent in the U.S. was granted in 1870.
